A long construction of Valencia’s new stadium

Valencia - Nou Mestalla 09.09.2013: The construction of the new stadium of Valencia CF – Nou Mestalla is getting longer and longer to complete. The construction of the stadium, built on the site of a former factory, began already in 2007 and by 2009 the basic concrete structure has been completely built. Then the construction works were suspended for financial reasons. By the end of 2011 the club announced that, following an agreement with the bank, the construction of the stadium will be completed and the property of the old Mestalla stadium will go to the bank.

The anticipated opening of Nou Mestalla should take place in 2014. As long as Valencia CF does not encounter other unexpected obstacles. Compared to the old stadium, which has a capacity of 55,000, the new stadium should hold 75,100 spectators. This would put Nou Mestalla one place higher, in third place, behind Nou Camp and Santiago Bernabeu, as far as capacity of Spanish stadiums is concerned. The construction of the stadium should cost approximately 250 to 300 million EUR.

The construction was also affected by a sad accident. In 2008 four workers lost their lives following a fall from the scaffolding. Let us hope that Valencia CF fans will see a new stadium shortly and without any other tragic incidents.
